Flexible sigmoidoscopy misses pre-cancerous polyps in women
Right Arrow Gold New England Journal of Medicine Abstract
Virtual Colonoscopy: "Where do we stand?"

Virtual colonoscopy is a screening technique that scans the colon using x-ray and computer technology to produce images. It has gained attention largely because it is seen as "less invasive" than conventional colonoscopy.  We genuinely believe, as do the American Cancer Society and the American College of Gastroenterology, that a variety of widely used colon cancer screening techniques have value.

We also believe that when compared with Virtual Colonoscopy, Optical Colonoscopy has an advantage that patients tend to appreciate.  The preparation for either exam requires a thorough bowel cleansing.  If polyps are found in an Optical Colonoscopy your Gastroenterologist can use an instrument to remove them on the spot.  If polyps are discovered during a Virtual Colonoscopy the patient has to then schedule a second procedure (Optical Colonoscopy) in order  to have them removed, often resulting in the need to repeat the bowel preparation process for the second exam.  Please read more about colon cancer screening at the websites of the ACS and ACG below:
