Infliximab (REMICADE®) Treatment for Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative ColitisInfliximab (REMICADE®) is a drug used in the treatment of moderate to severe cases of two types of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) – Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. The exact cause of IBD is not known. These diseases are thought to be caused by an overactive immune system that abnormally recognizes food and bacteria as being foreign substances, thus “attacking” them. This reaction is characterized by severe inflammation in the lining of the gastrointestinal tract that can cause ulcers, fistulas, diarrhea, and bleeding. Other symptoms of IBD can include severe pain and cramping, weight loss, and joint pain. Infliximab (REMICADE®) works by attacking tumor necrosis factor (TNF), a protein that is involved in the inflammation process. It is normally prescribed only for those patients who have not responded well to other treatments. If your physician prescribes Infliximab(REMICADE®), you will be given an intravenous infusion (IV) in your arm over a two-hour period. One of our healthcare professionals will monitor you during the infusion and for a period of time after. Most patients receive treatments every 8 weeksand are closely followed by their doctor through follow-up appointments. |
