Acute Severe Ulcerative Colitis: A Medical & Surgical Emergency Requiring Comprehensive, Timely Care

Dr. Joshua Steinberg, the Director of IBD – inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s & Colitis) for Gastroenterology of the Rockies, recently co-authored an article in Gastroenterology & Endoscopy News.

In the article, they reviewed a case of a young patient admitted to the hospital with acute severe ulcerative colitis (ASUC) who has not responded to IV corticosteroid therapy. The case and subsequent discussion were led by Jean-Paul Achkar, MD, with informed opinions from healthcare professionals (HCPs) who have a focus in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including gastroenterologists, colorectal surgeons, pharmacists, and GI trainees.

They reviewed the guidelines and literature on ASUC management, referring to the expert opinions of participants in the discussion, and proposed an IBD algorithm for the management of patients with ASUC.
